PEI’s PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy, started in 1991 by the PEI Literacy Alliance, has raised close to $400,000 for local literacy programs. The PEI PGI tournament is an extremely fun event with good food, great entertainment, music and poetry. Most of the golfers are PEI businesspeople who take a day off work to support this worthwhile cause. Every dollar raised stays in PEI to support literacy, and serves many purposes, including:

  • Providing ten $500 bursaries and three $1,500 scholarships to adult learners
  • Managing the LEARN line, the toll-free phone line for parents and learners to find information about literacy help in their region and supported by advertisements in Yellow Pages™ directories
  • Operating the annual Summer Tutoring Program for Kids
  • Supporting the Charlottetown Rotary Literacy Foundation
  • Managing special projects such as the 2007 Health and Literacy Summit

Participants include approximately 120 PEI business leaders who register either as part of a corporate team or a “Literacy Leader” team. This event raises much-needed funds, celebrates literacy and promotes people’s awareness of literacy issues - and gives golfers, sponsors and volunteers a wonderful experience that keeps them coming back!
