Local PGI Tournament Information - Calgary
Tournament Date: September 25-26, 2008
Senator Joyce Fairbairn receives a lesson about the workings of the antique fire engine, provided by the Firefighters Museum Society - Calgary.
PGI Calgary, benefiting the Calgary Learning Centre, is an exciting, fun-filled occasion. Golfers and guests mingle, enjoy exquisite food and live music, and bid on some wonderful silent-auction items at the pre-event cocktail reception.
The next morning participants enjoy a gourmet breakfast and a visit with fellow golfers before heading out to the greens of the spectacular Willow Park Golf and Country Club. The Firefighters Museum Society – Calgary, and the siren of their antique fire engine, signal the shotgun start of the Alberta Round-up and Senator Joyce Fairbairn, in her signature red, makes her way around the course, visiting with the golfers and selling raffle tickets. Golfers play 18 holes on immaculately groomed greens while challenging their brains with the Canada Post Literacy Quiz.
At the end of the day, golfers and volunteers enjoy another gourmet meal while our fabulous MC from CBC Radio, Jeff Collins, announces the prize-winning teams and individuals. Once all the prizes have been distributed, golfers are reminded of the true reason for the PGI Golf Tournaments for Literacy: an adult learner from the community is presented with The Co-operators Learner Achievement Award and tells the story of his or her journey towards literacy. We finish the day with an often funny, always heartfelt, poem from our CBC – Radio Canada Poet Laureate.
