Local PGI Tournament Information - The Briars
Tournament Date: June 9-10, 2008
In 1986, award-winning Canadian broadcaster and journalist Peter Gzowski began raising funds for Frontier College through an annual golf tournament, The Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) – an event that evolved into the national PGI Golf Tournaments for Literacy – as well as an ‘night-before’ event, now called The PGI Plays the Briars. Both events are hosted by CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers of Sounds Like Canada fame.
The PGI Plays the Briars
Part of the magic of The PGI Plays the Briars is the remarkable entertainment, made even more amazing due to the talent and influence of those who attend the event. The performers are among the best and brightest of Canadian entertainers, writers and public personalities, both local and national. The evening is a feast of food, music and readings, serving a who’s-who of Canadian business, politics, entertainment, arts and sports. Past special guests have included Peter Mansbridge, Loreena McKennitt, Valdy, Natalie McMaster, Barenaked Ladies, Laura Smith, Ashley MacIsaac, and many more!
PGI Golf Tournament
The following day, a round of golf on the Stanley Thompson-designed Briars Golf Course rounds out one of the most exclusive entertainment opportunities in the country. Golfers of varying ability play 18 holes in scramble format, with a shot-gun start at 8:00 a.m. A sumptuous feast follows, prepared by the fabulous chefs of The Briars Resort. Prizes are awarded, and golfers are then treated to a magical poem created especially for the day by a renowned Poet Laureate. Past Poets Laureate have included Margaret Atwood, Bill Richardson, Alistair MacLeod, and Jane Urqhuart.
