We will be inviting families at the Bowmanville and Newcastle sites to participate in numerous Literacy-based activities entitled "Literacy...Pass It On" up to and including the Family Literacy Day event on Sat. Jan. 24th. Everytime the family shares a literacy experience (which can include reading a book, writing on a calendar, grocery shopping list/grocery shopping sign searches, writing letters, computer activities that promote literacy development etc....) the child draws a picture and an adult writes the experience down. They bring all of the pictures to the event day, where they will participate in a variety of literacy activities (many home connection activities such as jello writing; Alphabet cereal word search; Books come Alive "OK book with wooden letter blocks) and other fun ideas. We will have a circle time every hour to read one of the Robert Munsch books from the list and and there will be a section set up for parents to read the stories throughout the day as well. Then the children will have the opportunity to add their collection of Literacy experiences to one another to see how long we can create the list of experiences (or how big we can compile a book of experiences).

St. Joseph's School has "Family Days" each month where students participate in a variety of events while working within school "families" (much like the Houses at Hogwarts). Family Literacy Day is providing us with an excellent recreational reading opportunity and the chance to help break a world record! How exciting!
